Environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria have become central in the real estate industry, not least as a result of the EU Taxonomy. According to the European Commission, buildings account for around 40 per cent of energy in the EU and generate around 36 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.

At Lehn & Partner, we are keenly aware of our responsibility with respect to ESG regulations. We incorporate ESG criteria into our valuations, and have anchored ESG considerations in our company strategy.

E

Environment

Environmental (the E in ESG) addresses efficiency in the consumption of energy and raw materials. As part of our ESG responsibilities, Lehn & Partner undertakes to perform all its activities in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient manner, minimize consumption of resources and dispose of consumed resources appropriately and professionally.

Site visits are generally an obligatory part of valuations, and involve extensive travel. The following actions are designed to minimize resource consumption in this area:

  • Efficient travel planning to avoid duplicating journeys
  • Avoidance of short-haul flights where possible
  • Use of the Lehn & Partner pool vehicle – an electric vehicle that can be charged at client car parks

Further sustainability measures in place at Lehn & Partner are:

  • Paperless office and digital archive
  • Sustainability in risk management
  • Free disposal of electrical waste for all employees by Documentus Bayern, a document and data destruction service
  • Actions to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF)
  • Offices easily reached by public transport
  • Sustainable procurement policy with long-standing providers

S

Social

The S in ESG stands for social topics including health, safety and the company-employee relationship. At Lehn & Partner, we prioritize a good working atmosphere. Mutual understanding and respect are generally created in the workplace by teamwork and interdisciplinary projects However, producing valuations and appraisals typically involves a large amount of non-collaborative activities. With this in mind, we foster contact by providing opportunities for interpersonal contact in the office and outside the work environment. Any unavoidable conflict at work is solved at an early stage in direct personal dialogue between those involved, with mediation if required. Workplace bullying is not tolerated at Lehn & Partner.

At Lehn & Partner, we value a healthy work/life balance between professional and family life. To achieve this, we offer working from home and part-time models, as well as leave of absence and financial support for further training activities.

We also place high value on our colleagues’ health and wellbeing by arranging health promotion activities, including:

  • Regular team sports events and running groups, office gym
  • State-of-the-art IT/workplace equipment, height-adjustable desks
  • Options for bike leasing and participation in Wellpass company fitness program
  • Company pension
  • Company health insurance for employees and their children up to the age of 21

G

Governance

The G in ESG stands for aspects including corporate governance and ethics, transparency in corporate organization and compliance with statutory and contractual conditions. We are supported in this by our DIN ISO 27000-certified management system.

Over the decades, Lehn & Partner has grown from Heinz Lehn’s original one-man office to become one of the largest owner-run valuation and appraisal providers in Germany. Continuing our founder’s philosophy, we foster a culture of empathy and respect. The majority of today’s management team began their valuation careers at Lehn & Partner, and reflect this in their conduct towards their colleagues. The principles of equal rights and continuity likewise characterize our external presence. Some of our customer relationships are already in the second generation – on both sides.

We are conscious of the responsibility we bear in the valuation process and are steadfast in our stance: objective, partnership-based, and consistent.
